The Nani Palkhivala Arbitration Centre (NPAC), is a non-profit company registered under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956. NPAC was set up by the Palkhivala Foundation to promote institutional arbitration in India, keeping in mind the growing burden on Indian courts and the inordinate delay in disposal of cases.
By providing world class facilities to conduct quick, efficient and cost effective arbitration proceedings, NPAC seeks to become a centre of excellence in the field of Institutional Arbitration.

Madras High Court Recognition Order

By its order dated 21.9.2005, the Madras High Court formally recognised NPAC by designating it “as an institution under sec 11 (b) of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act,1996”.

Arbitration

Any civil dispute which a Civil Court is competent to hear can be resolved by arbitration. However, arbitration cannot be used in respect of disputes, the resolution of which, has been by law referred exclusively to specialised tribunals or other statutory authorities.
The process of arbitration can be usefully applied in cases/disputes relating to the following such as:
• Civil engineering disputes.

Advantages of Arbitration

It is much more cost effective than litigation in conventional courts. Parties can choose their arbitrators and proceedings are regulated by NPAC rules that are simple and easy to apply and follow.

Provides for speedier resolution of disputes.
Can be done at times convenient to parties.
Less stressful than litigation.
Solution oriented.

Facilities

The facilities at NPAC include four halls with computer, projector, printer, photocopier, wi-fi, video conferencing etc., in each hall which are made available to the public to conduct arbitration proceedings from 10 am to 8 pm, throughout the year except on national holidays. A well-equipped library is an added feature.
NPAC provides the following:

• Court halls to conduct arbitration proceedings
• Secretarial and other support staff assistance
• Video conferencing and recording facilities
• Any services incidental to the conduct of arbitration proceedings

Arbitration Courses

NPAC has an MoU with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), India to provide courses for training professionals to become arbitrators. In the last few years, a number of courses have been conducted at NPAC. NPAC has been a pioneer in bringing all the three levels of the CIArb course to India.

Internship Programme

NPAC provides an opportunity for law students to do an internship with the Centre. 200 students from various colleges and universities in India have interned with NPAC. Interns gain practical knowledge and experience while witnessing arbitration proceedings.

Leadership Training

Palkhivala Foundation, and the Nani Palkhivala Arbitration Centre (NPAC) in association with Forum of Free Enterprise, Mumbai conduct an annual Leadership Training Programme for college students. In view of the overwhelming response the programme has also been taken to Trichy.

The Nani Palkhivala Arbitration Centre (NPAC) is proud to present the NPAC International Conference on Arbitration, focusing on "India and Global Arbitration: Opportunities and Challenges for 2025-2030." The event will take place on the evening of October 18 and throughout the day on October 19, 2024, at the Shangri-La's Eros Hotel in New Delhi. This conference will feature a fireside chat and an annual international conference, bringing together experts to discuss the future of arbitration.
